Thankful Tuesday ~ The Year in Retrospect

My birthday arrives in a few days. I look back at the past year and cannot help but thank God for:

1) A beautiful family

I am so glad to see J and An grow. On Sunday, Lyn arranged for a surprise birthday dinner for me with his side of the family. J was asked to pray for me. He hesitated and said he would do that later. During the meal, he asked me how much work I had to do. I told him that I had another 26 lesson plans to grade and each one took me about an hour. He promptly prayed that I would finish all my work by Tuesday. I was touched.

Today, we were walking home and as we exited a sheltered area, J realised it was drizzling. He said, "Mama, it is raining!" and proceeded to shield An's head from the rain with his hands!

An is also growing well while Lyn tries his best to be present for the kids. I am thankful for each of them.

2) Helpful extended family

I continue to thank God for the help I receive from my extended family. An is too young for school, so I appreciate the caregivers who look after her while Lyn and I work. About once a week, we trouble our family members to pick J up from school and they cheerfully perform the task. Aren't we blessed?

3) Wonderful friends

I appreciate my close friends (including my brother). Despite being on the upper side of my thirties, these friends have made the effort to meet up with me to celebrate my birthday. I am thankful for these friends who have provided listening ears, generosity, help, thoughtfulness, sound advice, company and prayers.

4) A fulfilling job

It takes more than an hour to travel to my workplace by public transport, yet I do not drag my feet to work because I find the job exciting. Sometimes, I smile while preparing my lessons as I anticipate the reactions of my students. I have also learnt a lot from the students. Thank God for such a fulfilling job!

5) Unexpected blessings

I have written about how An was blessed in a baby race. She emerged champion and the prizes were worth over $1000, although some were vouchers for enrichment classes. She has also received very pretty hand-me-downs. Last Sunday alone, I brought home two bags of clothes from two friends.

Last week, my blog was unexpectedly featured in sg.theasianparent.com. I am grateful to the people who saw potential in my blog. The asianparent website was the one that assured me that the formula milk that An is drinking is well-rated by parents. I also referred to it when I was looking up enrichment classes. I felt honoured that it listed my blog as one of the 35 blogs worthy of following.

Out of the blue, teachers' salaries would be increased in October and although we have not received the increment yet, I thank God for His blessing.

6) Contentment

Finally, I thank God for contentment. "I have learnt the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." Phil 4:12-13. I am happy with what I have and what I pray for is that my little family be used mightily to shed His love abroad. I have also learnt to give without expecting to receive and that is truly liberating.

May I be His instrument everywhere I go. Thank You, Jesus, for all You have done for me.
